Proper hydration during strenuous excercise?
I'm planning to do a very substantial amount of biking this summer -- one of my longer routes is just shy of 30 miles per day.
I know that it will be very demanding, and I know that proper hydration is crucial, so I am taking rather a lot of water along (at least 64 oz) and there are multiple water stops along the way.
It will be about 70 degrees when I start biking, and about 85 during the mid-to-late portion. Some of the terrain is hilly, and I will be carrying a backpack with about 5 to 10 pounds in it. The route is primarily urban, though it does utilize river trails and back-country roads.
So, how much water should I be drinking?
Also, what should I do regarding electrolytes? I know that they are absolutely essential and I do not want to get sick, but I also do not want to spend a ton of money or ingest a lot of sugary crap. Can I make my own electrolyte beverage instead of buying gatorade/pedialyte? How, and how much of that should I drink?
Thanks in advance!
Well the simple thing is to weigh yourself before and after the ride. On a hot day, several hour ride, I've lost up to 5 pounds. Water weighs about 8 pounds to the gallon, so you need to replace that before your next ride.
Of course if you slam down a half gallon of water, it's gonna come right back up. So just get in the habit of having water nearby at all times and keep drinking all day long. As long as your peeing frequently and it's "clear and plentiful" you're doing ok.
Re: electrolytes, a regular healthy diet does fine for most people. Sometimes I'll stop at a gas station and get a small bottle of OJ or V-8 on a really hot day, and cut it with water for the electrolytes.
While riding, drink whatever you like and your stomach can tolerate. No need to buy / mix up fancy stuff. One tip if you do mix your own is to make it really weak - it'll taste much stronger while riding and won't upset your stomach as much.
Have fun
Scott
